RCI Timeshare Exchange System: How It Really Works and Hidden Costs

8 min read

RCI (Resort Condominiums International) is the world's largest timeshare exchange network. Salespeople promise you can "vacation anywhere in the world" through RCI. This guide reveals how the system actually works, hidden costs, and why exchanges are much harder than promised.

What Is RCI?

RCI is a membership-based exchange network that allows timeshare owners to trade their week or points for stays at other resorts worldwide. Founded in 1974, RCI now includes over 4,300 affiliated resorts in 110 countries.

The promise: "Don't vacation at the same place every year! Exchange your week for any resort in our network." The reality: Exchanges are complicated, expensive, and often impossible for desirable locations and dates.

How RCI Exchange Works

1. Membership Required

RCI membership costs: Annual membership: $99-$149 per year. Corporate membership (included with some timeshares): Still requires activation and fees. Membership must be maintained continuously to access exchanges.

2. Deposit Your Week or Points

To exchange, you must first deposit your timeshare week or points into RCI: Deposit window: Usually 9-24 months before your use period. Deposit fees: $0-$199 depending on membership level. Expiration: Deposits typically expire after 1-2 years if not used.

3. Trading Power Determines Options

Your "trading power" determines what resorts and dates you can exchange for. Trading power factors: Resort quality and location. Season (peak vs. off-season). Unit size. How far in advance you deposit. Supply and demand in the exchange pool.

The problem: If you own an off-season week at a mediocre resort, your trading power is low. You can't exchange for peak season at premium locations.

4. Search and Book Exchange

Once deposited, you search RCI's inventory for available exchanges: Online search: Limited availability shown. Phone search: Agents may find additional options. Ongoing search: Set up alerts for desired locations.

Exchange fees: $199-$299 per exchange. Additional fees for premium locations or short-notice bookings. Guest certificates if someone else is traveling: $59-$99.

Hidden Costs of RCI Exchanges

Fee TypeCost
Annual RCI Membership$99-$149
Deposit Fee$0-$199
Exchange Fee$199-$299
Guest Certificate$59-$99
Combining Weeks Fee$149
Extension Fee$49-$99
Cancellation/Change Fee$99-$149
Total for Single Exchange$400-$900+

Plus your original maintenance fees: You still pay maintenance fees on your owned timeshare ($1,200-$2,500). Total cost for one exchange vacation: $1,600-$3,400+.

Why RCI Exchanges Are Harder Than Promised

1. Limited Availability for Desirable Locations

Popular destinations are rarely available: Hawaii, Disney, major ski resorts, European cities. Peak season dates (holidays, school breaks). Large units (3+ bedrooms).

Why? Owners of premium timeshares use them personally or rent them. Developers hold back inventory. High demand, limited supply.

2. Trading Power Mismatch

Most owners discover their trading power is insufficient for desired exchanges. Example: You own off-season Florida week (low trading power). You want Christmas week in Aspen (high trading power required). RCI shows "no availability" because your trading power doesn't qualify.

3. Last-Minute Availability Only

Often, the only available exchanges are: Last-minute bookings (30-60 days out). Off-season dates. Less desirable locations. Small units.

This makes planning family vacations difficult since you can't book far in advance.

4. Deposit Timing Games

To maximize trading power, you must deposit 12-24 months in advance. But if you deposit early and don't find an exchange you want, your deposit expires worthless. You've given up your week with nothing in return.

RCI Points vs. Weeks

RCI offers two exchange systems: Weeks-based: Trade your fixed week for another week. Points-based: Convert your week to points, use points for exchanges.

Points system issues: Conversion rates favor RCI, not owners. Point values fluctuate based on demand. Premium locations require far more points than you receive for depositing your week. Points expire if not used within 1-2 years.

Better Alternatives to RCI Exchange

1. Book Hotels or Vacation Rentals

Cost comparison: RCI exchange total cost: $1,600-$3,400. Hotel or Airbnb for one week: $1,000-$2,500. Benefits: Choose exact location and dates. No trading power limitations. Flexible cancellation policies. No annual membership fees.

2. Interval International

RCI's main competitor offers similar exchange services. Some owners report better availability and customer service. Cost: Similar fee structure to RCI. Drawback: Still subject to trading power and availability issues.

3. Exit Your Timeshare

Instead of paying maintenance fees + RCI fees + exchange fees: Exit your timeshare through legal cancellation. Use the money saved to book vacations wherever and whenever you want. Enjoy true flexibility without ongoing obligations.
